Los Angeles — Chandler “The Jet” Jones, a celebrated football star from Bishop Montgomery High School and San José State University, tragically died at age 33 in a freeway accident on Sunday, June 22, 2025. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Jones was struck by a Toyota RAV4 around 2 a.m. on the Marina (90) Freeway near the Centinela Avenue off-ramp, succumbing to blunt traumatic injuries at the scene.
Jones, a Los Angeles native, was a standout wide receiver at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance, where he still holds records for the longest kick-off return (97 yards) and fumble recovery (98 yards). At San José State, he set program records with 248 career receptions and 31 touchdown catches, earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors in 2013 after a stellar senior season with 79 catches for 1,356 yards and 15 touchdowns. His dynamic play earned him the nickname “The Jet.”
After a brief NFL stint with teams like the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jones played and later coached for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League, contributing to their 2023 Grey Cup victory. He also served as a graduate assistant at San José State and coached at the College of Idaho.
“It is with great sadness that we share the passing of alum, Chandler Jones ’09,” Bishop Montgomery High School posted on social media. San José State Football mourned their loss, stating, “Forever in our hearts, #89.” Tributes poured in from coaches, teammates, and fans, with former San José State coach Brent Brennan calling him “an incredible person” who elevated the program daily.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision. Jones leaves behind a legacy of athletic excellence and heartfelt connections in the football community. His family, friends, and former teams have requested privacy during this difficult time.
