Chatsworth, CA – On May 9, 2025, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a vegetation fire at Stony Point Park in Chatsworth, where a small brush fire ignited at the peak of the park’s iconic sandstone formation. Difficult terrain forced firefighters to rely on water-dropping helicopters to contain the blaze.

LAFD units from Fire Station 96 were dispatched to 11500 Topanga Canyon Boulevard after reports of a fire at Stony Point, a popular climbing and hiking destination. Upon arrival, crews found a small brush fire burning at the mountain’s summit, fueled by dry vegetation amid ongoing drought conditions. Hand crews hiked to the site, but steep, rocky terrain made it nearly impossible to deploy hose lines effectively. To combat the access challenge, LAFD requested water-dropping helicopters, which arrived within 30 minutes and began precision drops to douse the flames. The fire, estimated to cover a quarter-acre, was contained by 8:30 p.m., preventing spread to surrounding brush or nearby residential areas. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
Tips can be reported to LAFD at (213) 893-9800
