HONOLULU — July 30, 2025 A dramatic time lapse video released today shows dozens of boats swiftly departing the harbor near Aloha Tower in Downtown Honolulu, after authorities issued an urgent advisory in response to a potential tsunami threat.
The footage, taken just after sunrise, captures the coordinated movement of vessels heading out to deeper waters in a designated safe zone offshore. Harbor officials directed the evacuation to prevent boats from being damaged or destroyed by sudden surges if a tsunami were to reach the coastline.
The alert came following seismic activity in the Pacific, prompting Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency to activate precautionary protocols. While no tsunami ultimately made landfall, the harbor area was temporarily closed as a safety measure.
“We appreciate the cooperation of the boating community in responding quickly and calmly,” said a spokesperson for the Hawaii Department of Transportation Harbors Division. “Getting vessels into deeper water is one of the best ways to protect both boats and harbor infrastructure.”
Officials continue to monitor the situation. No injuries or damage have been reported. The harbor reopened later in the day once the threat had passed.
