Sylmar, CA November 9, 2025 At approximately 2:30pm today, Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACOFD) and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Rescue Airship responded to multiple reports of hikers in distress on the May Canyon Trail in Sylmar.
One member of a nine-person hiking group had fallen roughly 20 feet down a steep cliff, sustaining a severe head injury and heavy bleeding. The remote and rugged terrain prevented ground units from reaching the scene.

Air resources were immediately deployed. Helicopters located the group, assessed the situation from above, and inserted rescue personnel directly to the injured hiker. Firefighter paramedics provided on scene treatment before securing the patient for hoist extraction.

The injured hiker was airlifted to a nearby trauma center for further care due to the seriousness of the head injury. All nine hikers were accounted for. The scene was cleared after the patient was transported and the area deemed safe.
