PIRU, Calif. A rapidly growing wildfire, dubbed the Canyon Fire, erupted near Lake Piru in Ventura County on August 7, 2025, and has since burned into Los Angeles County, scorching over 5,370 acres. The blaze, reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. near Holser Canyon Road, was fueled by triple-digit temperatures, low humidity, and winds up to 25 mph, creating dangerous fire conditions.
The fire, initially estimated at 30 acres, exploded to over 1,000 acres within hours and reached 5,370 acres by Thursday night, with 0% containment. Evacuation orders were issued for the Lake Piru Recreation Area, as well as communities including Camulos, Piru, Val Verde, Hasley Canyon, and Castaic. An evacuation warning was issued for ranches in western Holser Canyon. Approximately 5,370 residents and 1,400 structures are impacted, with power lines and scattered ranch homes threatened.
Firefighters from Ventura and Los Angeles counties, supported by Angeles National Forest personnel, are battling the blaze with water-dropping helicopters and air tankers using Lake Piru for refills. An evacuation center is open at the College of the Canyons East Gymnasium in Santa Clarita, with large animals accepted at Pierce College and smaller pets at Castaic and Agoura Hills animal shelters.
The cause of the Canyon Fire remains under investigation. Authorities urge residents to follow evacuation orders and monitor updates via vcemergency.com or local emergency broadcasts.
